As many of you might have already heard by now, the great state of Hawaii passed a resolution on Wednesday May 6th declaring September 24th “Islam Day” in their home state. This is incredible news and something we should make sure to thank the Senators and Representatives who voted in favor of HCR100. I’ve provided a link to the resolution itself for you to read at leisure. I’m sure you will agree that the resolution definitely puts a smile on your face and makes you wish you lived in Hawaii, for more than just the obvious reasons;) So please, make it a priority to email and call the list of Senators and Representatives expressing to them your gratitude and appreciation for doing the right thing. I’ve heard that many of the Senators have been barraged with emails/calls from people who adamantly oppose the resolution (which doesn’t surprise me). Therefore, your immediate show of support is timely. Thank you and please feel free to pass this information along to others.

Now I understand why the author of Play Money, Julian Dibbell spends a good portion of the “Acknowledgment” in his book emphasizing the point that this is in fact a “real” story (no pun intended). Thank God for that clarification, because let me tell you, 40 pages into his book and I was still convinced that I was reading a science-fiction story. The very idea that I was about to embark on reading the tale of one man’s life who sought to make real money in the virtual world sounded very interesting at the beginning, I mean very beginning, and I’m talking about five pages into his narrative beginning. But quickly enough, I began to sink into this very odd place where the lives of people, like the author himself, were entrenched in this Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMO’s). This whole dimension/world, whatever you want to call it, seemed very bizarre to me (understatement of the year).

To be fair to the author and the book, this was the first time I had heard of the world of MMO’s, so you can imagine how I might have felt…lost, confused, dumbfounded… to say the least. So here we have this author, Julian Dibbell, who for the sake of this book was actually conducting a project to see if he could succeed in making some significant dough in the virtual world. But what about all the other people who Dibbell talks about in his book who were immersed in games like Ultima Online; I mean 10-15-20 hour a day type of immersions, what was their excuse? And even Dibbell himself wasn’t exactly being forced into the job of playing these games. As I recall, in the beginning of the book the author poignantly says:

“Something had to give. The twenty hours a week I was devoting to the game were no big deal

Compared to the sixty, seventy, and even eighty hours some players put in…I knew then that I

Would either have to quit the game cold turkey or find some way to do what was in principle

Impossible: Give the game a point. Make it productive. Turn the imaginary career into a real

                One” (pg. 7-8)

O.k. fine, I get it, games are a lot of fun. I mean really, who doesn’t like a mean game of Monopoly, Tetris, or Taboo to get one’s competitive juices flowing. But there is a limit isn’t there? Besides the “fun factor”, the logic that many of the gamers in the book use is that gaming can be a lucrative financial business. In the cases referenced in the book I personally found the “financially lucrative” argument to be not so convincing. The author himself gave up a year of his life to partake in this venture to make how much at the end?! Sure it may technically sound like a lot of people in the book were making tons of money, because in Ultima Online and other worlds like it, characters trade in the millions, making it sound like “netting 300,000 in two weeks” is a lot. But in U.S. dollars world, 300k amounts to less than just $5.00!!!

Reading about “Britannian real estate”, the upscale “Malas region”, and how people were paying upwards of $60 USD for suits of armor for their avatars, was all just, how do I put it in the politest way possible? W-E-I-R-D. I still don’t fully understand why people end up spending all this time living in worlds that aren’t real. I sincerely want to understand why? Why not take all the time and energy that one invests in games like Second Life and invest it into the “real world”? Again, I’m not trying to sound mean or judgmental, but I guess I just don’t get it. I just don’t understand why someone would want to spend the majority of their day riding around on unicorns, building virtual homes, and buying swords in make believe worlds?

I DO understand that playing games CAN be a good way to relax, to get in touch with one’s creative self, and “yes”, to even escape from reality for a BIT. But to make an entire life out of virtual gaming?! Now that’s a completely different story; something that I’m not embarrassed to say I don’t understand, even after all my reading.

I encourage people to step out of Second Life for a moment and explain to people like myself, who really are curious, what all the hype is about. Maybe through helping me understand the logic behind why people go into virtual worlds might lend a hand to me, and others like me, to cross over to the “other side”. Now I wouldn’t go betting a million “gold pieces” on it…but hey, anything is possible, right?

Enamored with Facebook from the first day I joined it nearly a year ago; this social networking tool has definitely carved out a special place in my life. And why shouldn’t it? I use it to keep in touch with friends and family, to network with people, to post information on upcoming events, to keep up with news via posts from people that I am linked to, etc. And now with Facebook breaking the 200 million mark of online users, which would make it the 5th largest country in the world (if it were a country), its hard not to be swept into the “Facebook Madness”.

Apart from being able to see pictures of my friends on vacation or watching a video stream of the American Idol contestants on a friend’s wall, Facebook has also proven to be a very successful platform for businesses, organizations, and social advocacy groups who hope to promote their brand and/or message. Many of the particulars which companies/organizations find to be enticing when using Facebook include the ability for it to “reach”, the fact that it enables the “brand”/ “message” to interact directly with their fan base/supporters, that fact that it is personal, and of course, the fact that it is totally free.

So I asked myself the question, “Nadia, how can you use Facebook to help shed some light on an ethnic group who finds themselves subjected to negative stereotyping in this day and age”? Who am I talking about? ME ! One of the 3.5 million Arab-Americans living in the United States today. As I searched and scanned many of the existing “Arab American” groups currently on Facebook , I couldn’t find a single group where someone who wasn’t Arab-American might want to join. O.k., let me be a little bit more blunt, joining a group where the only thing available to the members is a link to Al Jazeera and a discussion board about “You know you are an Arab when”, is REALLY not fun, even for an Arab-American. Therefore, with Facebook being the “networking monster” that it is, it would be a real shame not to utilize it to address the stereotypes plaguing the Arab-American community living here in the United States.

So I’ve come up with a creative way to combat stereotypes about Arab Americans that includes using Facebook as the social networking platform in which the campaign will be conducted on. The campaign will be supported by and organized through the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) on behalf of Arab-Americans. The page, which will be titled, “I am Arab, I am American”, will be an interactive forum where through the implementation of a game and contest, visitors will not only learn about Arab-Americans and their culture but will also be rewarded with prizes for their participation. In the hopes of driving visitors to the page and building a large following, the “I am Arab, I am American” page on Facebook will be linked to other companies whose CEO’s/founders are Arab-American. For example, networking with other platforms might include linking to Farouk Systems, Joseph Abboud, Del Monte Produce, and HSBC Bank. Furthermore, by creating a contest that includes participation, members of the page not only get an opportunity to learn about Arab-Americans, but also have fun during the process and when doing so, become enticed to join because of prizes and coupons presented to them by partnering sites.

O.K., so you havn’t gotten to the best part of the contest yet! Every time members of the page complete the interactive game on Facebook, their name will be put into a drawing for the grand prize, an opportunity to spend an entire week in Hollywood with the Arab-American of their choice: Tony Shalhoub (of The Monk) or Paula Abdul (from American Idol). If neither of those Arab-American personalities sound appealing to them, they will be afforded the opportunity to opt out of “Hollywood Week” and accept the alternative prize, two first class round trip tickets on Emirates Air to any destination in the world (your choice). The only catch is they have to fly by December 31, 2009.

Quick question, which late Arab-American was a comedian and the founder of St. Jude’s Children’s Research hospital? A right answer to that question on the Arab-American Facebook challenge might get you a $5.00 coupon for free Del Monte pineapples. Now who doesn’t like “free” pineapples?! Arab-American or not.

I have been walking up and down 18th street in N.W. Washington for the past six months past the boarded up storefront with the “Nando’s Peri Peri Coming Soon” sign in the window. Soon??? How soon? It really felt like it was never “soon” enough. If you work in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, D.C. you’ve most likely heard people chatter about when that “freakin chicken” place was going to open?!! I mean come on, we had our first African-American President elected into office, Facebook has surpassed their 200 million user mark, and Bernie Madoff has been thrown into the slammer, all while that “chicken place” never opened. With the economy tanking and businesses closing left and right, I had a weird hunch that Nando’s Peri-Peri was never going to open. But being the nosey Taurus that I am, I walked by it the other day on route to one of the two Subways that I always go to for lunch to see what was going on. “Opening April 8th”. “ “NO FREAKIN WAY”! So I ran back to the office and shared the “news” with my co-workers…Subway was going to have to wait…at least for a day.

We called Nando’s on April 8th, intending to go christen the place only to have an employee tell us that the food inspector sill has not shown up so they weren’t going to be opening till the 9th! Ok…so the 9th it is. I mean really, what is one more day in the grand scheme of things? So today my co-worker and I ventured out to see if all this hype about this famous Portuguese chicken place lived up to its reputation and the apparent cult following it has in Europe.

So we get there around 1 o’clock on opening day…can you say “S-M-A-R-T”! “Ohh look, Nadia, you made it right in time for the lunch rush”!? Honestly, it felt like I was waiting in line for a ride at Paramount’s Kings Dominion…the only thing missing was the marker with the height restriction;) But I had to wait; we came too far to turn back at this point. But in all honesty, the line really wasn’t as bad as it looked (15-20 minutes to get to the cashier)….I don’t know, maybe because there was so much buzz in the air that it really didn’t feel long at all. Also, all the employees were super nice which was an extra added bonus.

Now to the most important part, how good was the food? I got the ¼ chicken (spiced medium) with a side of Portuguese rice and a side of coleslaw and of course my fountain diet coke with 1/3 of the cup filled with ice. Ok, the chicken was “OFF THE HOOK”, meaning “REALLY GOOD”. You can get it in a wrap, between a bun, etc. I just decided to go with the traditional, “right of the grill and onto a plate” version. White meat can often run dry, but not at this place. It was tender and juicy, just right! I tried a couple of the sauces that they have on the fixen bar and I wasn’t very keen on any of them. Honestly, the chicken tasted superb “as is”. Word of advice: don’t bother lathering it with all the unnecessary condiments. The Portuguese rice wasn’t very good at all, in fact, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The coleslaw was great, very light on the mayo and fresh tasting. But what really took the crown were their chicken livers!! Yeah you heard me! My co-worker ended up getting them and of course I had to try it. Ukkkkh! Was it good! But because liver has such a strong taste you might want to just order only one on its own and share with a friend. The key though is that you have to order the chicken livers “medium” spiced. Don’t forget! That’s key!

Was it worth the wait? Sure. But I will suggest to call ahead for carryout next time as opposed to waiting till you get to the restaurant to order (like someone I know who did). The atmosphere was also surprisingly really nice. I’m not sure Nando’s will kill my relationship with Subway but it definitely adds a new dimension to dining options in the Dupont Circle area. Now if only an incredible sushi restaurant could open here, life would definitely be good;)

It’s no secret by now that social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs have taken the United States by storm. It seems like everyone you know these days is either updating or uploading something: “video of little Lola sweeping her mommy’s kitchen floor”, “picture of baby Maya on the first day she was born”, or an article in Vanity Fair about the recent Bernie Madoff scandal. Honestly, I feel so thankful that something like Facebook has come along to help keep me abreast of all the daily happenings of my friend’s lives. I mean really, Facebook has definitely made my life 100 x’s easier in keeping up with everyone! Don’t you feel the same way too?

But it’s not just the “superficial” reasons that keep me coming back to checking my Facebook account a few times a day…ok, maybe more than just a few times a day, hahah;) It’s far more reaching than that. Its tools like Facebook and Twitter that also help keep me up to date with world politics, economics, and other pressing issues. So sure, it’s fun to know what famous celebrity I would be most compatible with, but using social networking tools are far more serious than just that for me.

Let it be known that Americans are not the only people who are caught up in this social phenomenon on the net. This craze in respect to social media is not just indigenous to the U.S.; in fact, people from all over the world are continuously being bitten by this “bug”. So far my final paper in my Intro. to the Digital Age Class I’ve decided to write about how social networking tools impact the Middle East socially and politically and specifically examine how these tools serve to reshape the region in the future.

Here in the U.S. we have watched and continue to watch how social media is driving public affairs, case in point: the election of President Barack Obama. In many parts of the Middle East, such as in Egypt and Iran, bloggers and Facebook users are trying to create a groundswell of support for people who oppose the existing political regimes in their countries. How effective are these people being? Well that is a question that one must explore. But one thing is for sure, the number of people in the Middle East who are blogging and Facebook’ing are on a steady rise.

Is it idealistic for me to think that Facebook groups that promote justice in the Middle East will be the driving force that finally thrust the Palestinians and Israelis into a lasting peace? Or will it possibly be a massive collective of “tweets” that congregate millions of people together in Cairo to topple the Mubarak regime? Or perhaps it might be that charismatic blogger in Saudi Arabia that finally mobilizes enough people in Saudi Arabia to stand up for woman’s rights?

I’m curious to see what people’s thoughts are on the idea that a social and political revolution could potentially occur in the Middle East because of this internet phenomenon. A friend of mine tackled this very notion by answering a question that I posed on Facebook about the likelihood of this ever happening. She responded on my wall by saying that: “they do provide a voice for the disenfranchised.. how effective they are and if they’ll succeed in changing anyone’s mind…I’m not sure”

I’m not sure either at this point but I am curious to learn more about the role in which social media is playing right now in the Middle East and about the direction it continues to take in the region, both politically and socially

Will the creators of Facebook, be the recipients of a Noble Peace Prize anytime soon? One never knows;)

After reading that first line of chapter eight in John Battelle’s book, The Search, I couldn’t help but laugh. I remembered myself, that pudgy little girl with unruly curly hair being sent up to the principal’s office for excessive talking and for not listening to classroom rules. My teachers used to scare the daylights out of me, always talking about this “permanent record” of mine and how it would come back to haunt me one day. As if swapping my hummus sandwich for Sean’s bag of Doritos was really any justifiable reason to be reprimanded. “No exchanging lunches boys and girls”. Evil, if you think about it now. However, looking at it in retrospect, it was a very clever method in keeping the students in check. Again, evil, but clever.

Really, how could anyone ever have found out that I pushed my classmate Leona down a set of stairs in the 4th grade?! Maybe no one would ever have known about my childhood “mishaps” circa 1980’s, but now in 2009 we are living in an era where “secrets” no longer exist. In fact, I still find myself googling “Leona Clauge”, checking to see if there is, in actuality, any stories written about my childhood calamities embedded somewhere in the virtual world for the entire world to see.

But what if I don’t want people to know anything about me, or at least very little? Do I even have a choice anymore? With the metamorphosis of “search” through engines like Google, people now have the ability to find information on nearly anyone and or anything at anytime. Barriers to entry in finding information in the virtual world are now nearly nonexistent. The idea of “search” has become in my opinion a double edge sword. As the person doing the research, the notion of “the sky’s the limit” is great. But if I’m the person that is being “searched”, well the skies aren’t looking so sunny and bright after all. Maybe I don’t want my elementary school physical education records made public on the web. Is it really necessary for EVERYONE in the world to know that even in the fifth grade I couldn’t run a mile under 9 minutes?!

The author John Battelle himself grapples with this very idea of “privacy” in his book The Search. After reading the chapter titled “Search, Privacy, Government, and Evil” I knew there really was no need to continue this internal debate in my mind about privacy. The sanctity of term as we know it no longer exists on paper in the United States. In fact, it was after the September 11 tragedy that the USA PATRIOT Act was introduced erasing the word privacy out of all of our dictionaries. So if the government wanted to find out every little thing about me, such as the last one hundred sites I searched on Google and who I chatted with on Facebook, they could._

My fear is that we have fully exposed ourselves as individuals for the entire world to see. In some cases our disclosure of information has been intentional but in many other cases our disclosure of information has not been so intent; case in point: implementation of the PATRIOT Act. This legislation has been extremely controversial in stripping all Americans of anonymity and subjecting everyone to complete exposure. Even Google has found itself in a predicament where they are required by law to disclose information on its users if and when they are asked by government officials. (See Google’s privacy policy)

The authors tell it like it is, creating very persuasive arguments in their book by highlighting first-hand accounts of how blogging has enhanced the business experiences of those who have incorporated it in their communication model. Many of the people interviewed for the book, such as Toby Bloomberg, owner of the Diva Marketing Blog, wholeheartedly believes that if you own a business or work for one, makes you a prime candidate for becoming an immediate blogger.

So I asked myself the very question: should my parents who own a small furniture store that caters mostly to a Hispanic community have a blog? Should my uncle who just opened up his dream coffee shop in Washington, D.C. be writing a blog? Or should I, a Public Relations Consultant for the Palestinian Diplomatic Mission to the U.S. be keeping a blog on behalf of who I work for? The answers I came up with after reading Naked Conversations were the following: “maybe”, “yes”, and “would love to, but can’t”.

I will say, had I had a blog for work just two months ago, makes me wonder the impact that it might have made during the most recent incursion between the Palestinians and Israelis.

It was December 27th, 2008 and I’m in the Middle East on vacation, staying with one of my best girlfriends in Dubai. While sitting on a couch in her Jumeira Beach Residence apartment, Al Jazeera breaks a story of Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Where was I?? Thousands of miles away from the epicenter of world diplomacy eating shawarma sandwiches and trying to decide what trendy restaurant we were going to go to for New Year’s Eve. “ZUMA it is”.

With an exception of keeping up with Facebook and my emails, I felt completely cut off from my job. When your organization or company finds itself in the midst of a crisis, a vacation quickly takes a back seat to war. I honestly felt like there was little I could do being thousands of miles away from Washington. However, I didn’t need to be geographically close to our Nation’s Capital to be connected; I didn’t have to feel that way. I should have been able to respond to the countless work emails I was getting to one centralized location: a blog. I should have been able to “reply back to the world”, not to just one email at a time.

The “should haves” can go on and on, but the sad truth is, I couldn’t. The reality is, I could not and cannot blog on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. I currently work as a consultant for a country whose culture Scoble and Israel identify in their book as being restrictive, a government where personal sharing is not acceptable. Do I agree with this closed off approach to the world? “No”. However, is it the current reality? “Yes”.

Scoble and Israel do an excellent job focusing on such realities in the latter part of Naked Conversations; highlighting that there are other sides to the equation of blogging that are “not prone to Pollyanna outlooks”. The authors are very honest in saying that “wherever there are roses, there are thorns”; and although blogging has taken the world by storm, there are still those companies, governments, organizations, and people that should not and cannot blog, for whatever reason. Period. The end.

As technology unfolds and evolves at such a rapid pace, the internet as we know it continues to alter the way we live our lives as people. We can now, on a basic more superficial level, buy movie tickets, make dinner reservations, and order groceries, all online. As more and more newspapers have found new “homes” on the World Wide Web, we have slowly begun to turn to the www.coms of the world to read our respected news online as well. As mainstream newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post have found their niche amongst the millions of other domain names available, citizen journalists and bloggers have also begun to find their places online as well. Through grassroots journalism, “ordinary citizens” have been able to write, record, post pictures, and upload video images on topics that may have been intentionally or unintentionally overlooked by other journalists.

Since news is happening around the globe at every second, of every minute, of every day; leaving citizen journalists a plethora of opportunities to disperse news about important events happening around the world. In relation to world news, it was in fact author Dan Gillmor’s discussion on the role and impact of citizen journalism and blogging in oppressed and often times censored societies, which really struck a chord with me in this week’s reading assignment for class. In his book, We the Media, Gillmor focuses on regions of the world, such as Iran, Iraq, China, Indonesia and the Philippines, where the blogosphere has played a critical role in getting out silenced voices.

In, We the Media, Gillmor introduces us to the story of Sina Motallebi, an Iranian blogger who in 2003 was discovered and jailed in Iran for his blog. For many people around the globe the protections of the First Amendment are not afforded to them and the consequences of writing openly in a blog can bring about the demise of that individual. In the case of Motallebi, he was one of the lucky few who had other bloggers and journalists around the world come to his aid, protesting his jailing. Hence, because of international pressure, Iranian officials ultimately released Motallebi 23 days later and moved him permanently to Europe. However, as Gillmor notes in his book, regardless of the fact that Motallebi was physically y removed from Iran, the legacy of what he blogged about did not disappear from the consciousness of Iranians.

I’m hopeful that technology has created a permanent venue and possibility for millions to speak, to have their stories told, and to have their undeniable truths heard by the rest of the world. Technology has made it possible for the oppressed to have their voices resonate and to conjure up forces of change to make the world a better place for them and others. For example, it was because of technology that the President of the Philippines was overthrown a few years ago. Through massive protests, all organized through text messaging, an entire government as we knew it ceased to exist. It is unbelievable to think that a government’s existence laid at the very hands of millions of cell phone users who were disgruntled with the status quo of their nation.

Through the rise of such technological tools as blogs, websites, and SMS, governments and their policies will slowly begin to find themselves at the epicenter of change. Not necessarily because they want to, but because they will have no choice. I believe that citizen journalism will bring rise for the status quos in some countries to be questioned by its own people, as we have seen in the citizen lead coup in the Philippines, but also by citizens of conscious all around the globe. I think it is just a matter of time when oppressive countries begin to realize that they can no longer silence those who do not want to be silenced; more importantly recognizing the fact that in this day in age people will find a way to have their voices heard. Whether through text messaging, blogs, twitter, facebook, video phones, or digg, the revolution of mass expression has begun ladies and gentleman and at this point there is no turning back!
